The Niagara’s Baseball Team
The first organized baseball team in Buffalo were the Niagaras. In 1857 the Niagaras became one of the most popular baseball teams in the country. They once scored 209 runs in one game. The Niagara’s played until the 1870′s when the Bisons were born. Statistics were recorded differently than now, including such items as “bats broken,” “total number of pitches by the Niagaras,” and “least number of balls pitched by the Niagaras.” In 1860, on the day the city’s 2nd majestic Liberty Pole was erected/dedicated, the Niagaras played a special feature afternoon game against the Brooklyn Excelsiors.
