TimeLine History of Memorial Auditorium:
§ 1938: city officials applied for the funds needed to build the new structure
§ 1939: construction began on November 30 as a public works project
§ 1940: Memorial Auditorium opened its doors and the American Hockey League’s Buffalo Bisons played its inaugural season
§ 1946: The National Basketball League’s Buffalo Bisons played its first and only season at the Aud.
§ 1957: Elvis Presley rocked the house
§ 1960: JFK’s presidential rally
§ 1970: Buffalo Bisons hockey played its last season by winning the Calder Cup Championship. The Aud was also renovated leading to the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres and NBA’s Buffalo Braves’ opening seasons.
§ 1975: Stanley Cup Final
§ 1978: The NBA’s Buffalo Braves played their last season at the Aud when they relocated to Los Angeles where they became the LA Clippers.
§ 1982: Frank Sinatra and his Ol’ Blue Eyes and Wayne Gretzky breaks record for the most goals in on season
§ 1986: Gilbert Perreault scores his 500th goal
§ 1996: Bandits win the World Championship and LaFontaine closes the Aud
§ 2009: Demolition of the Aud.
