Buffalo Mass Mob XIII
Saint Katherine Drexel Church
135 North Ogden Street
Buffalo, NY 14206
On Sunday, October 4, 2015 at 10:00am, Saint Katherine Drexel Church will host Buffalo Mass Mob XIII. The Buffalo Mass Mob group identified Saint Katherine’s as a historic and architecturally significant church that would benefit from a boost of attendance. We are utilizing social media to publicize the mass date and time with the intent of packing the pews like they once were decades ago. Our objective is to raise awareness about the neighborhood church, re-energize, fill the coffers, and to pray together.
Saint Katherine Drexel welcomes all. They say, “What we mean by is ‘all people are welcome,’ single, twice divorced, under 30, gay, filthy rich, black and proud, poor as dirt, can’t sing, no habla ingles, married with pets, older than God, more Catholic than the Pope, workaholic, bad speller, screaming babies, three-times divorced, passive-aggressive, obsessive, compulsive, tourists, seekers, doubters, bleeding hearts….. and YOU!!”
The church, in which is tucked away on one of Lovejoy’s neighborhood sidestreets, has a very unique setup because the service is actually presented in the middle of the room and the pews circle all of the way around. It was built in 1959 and designed by Albert Rumschick. In addition, the magnificent windows of the church tell the life of Saint Francis. The parish was formed in 2007 with the joining of St. Agnes, St. Frnacis, and Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary parished. The parish is on the site of the former Saint Francis of Assisi Parish.
The day of Buffalo Mass Mob is also a special day for the parish as it is also the Feast Day of Saint Francis of Assisi.
Our city is known for its incredible architecture. Part of this architectural mix are the many churches located throughout Buffalo. These houses of worship helped shape and define the city as we know it. It is Buffalo Mass Mob’s hope to help create more awareness and appreciation for sacred sites in Western New York through the simple act of experiencing them in their intended purpose and encourage people to attend Mass more at Buffalo’s historic churches.
Inspired by the successful Buffalo Cash Mob and a Facebook Mass done at Saint Adalbert Basilica a couple of years ago, Buffalo Mass Mob has, in grassroots fashion, allowed people to support and experience some of Buffalo’s wonderful churches in need of a boost. The concept is simple. The Buffalo Mass Mob picks a church and you come to Mass there.
Twelve Buffalo Mass Mobs are in the books. We have visited virtually every neighborhood in Buffalo, from Blackrock to Riverside, from the West Side to the East Side, from Keisertown to the Old First Ward and South Buffalo. Our first Mass Mob was at Saint Adalbert Basilica on 11-2-2013 and we can’t wait to pack the pews in Lovejoy on October 4th! We’ve been very successful thus far. The results have included new parishioners to churches, large spikes in the dollar amounts placed in coffers, re-energizing, making people aware that these churches exist, education via tours regarding the history, architecture, and preservation, and the joy that is brought to everyone seeing the pews being filled once again! It is an such an easy way for anyone to support the wonderful churches we have here in Buffalo. All that you need to do is show up!
